Tiers of decking
Hampstead, London
Overlapping decks are used to create interest and slow the journey through this private garden which is architectural in layout, but offering a strong feeling of nature. Bordering the main terrace, a sunken channel of water, provides an opportunity for subtle reflections from passing clouds and overhanging trees. This is bridged by a blue limestone slab which leads onto tiers of decking, surrounded by a sea of perennials, grasses and herbs. On the highest level a table recessed into the deck is positioned in the shade of an existing apple tree. Designed in collaboration with Helen Tindale.
