BLACK mountain cottage, wales

The biggest challenge in designing a garden for this cottage, built on the side of a mountain in Powys, was to create some level, sheltered areas from which to enjoy the garden and the wonderful views of the Black Mountains. The pattern of green fields surrounded by hedging suggested the layout of rectangular lawn with a border of plants inspired by local plant communities. The existence of a natural stream provided an opportunity for a wildlife pond. Overall the design complements the landscape without trying to compete with it.
