Urban Retreat, Bristol
The gardens of this Clifton property are connected by repetition of the angular theme and by the planting palette. The entrance is a stepped grove containing wedge-shaped beds of birch, woodland perennials and ferns, alternated with synthetic grass landings. The shapes give the entrance an edgy, dynamic quality which is tempered and grounded by the repeated birch trees. The back garden, bordered by sculptural pines is a tranquil, meditative space arranged around a large, reflective pool. On the kitchen terrace generous planters are filled with herbs, vegetables and espaliered apple trees.
