st george’s bristol

This tranquil garden is part of the curtilage of St George’s Bristol, a major concert venue in the centre of the city. It seemed appropriate, given the history of the site as a churchyard, to use a pared down composition of crab apples, mown lawn and meadow, set against an existing bay tree. The grassy terraces provide level areas for a range of activities - from wedding receptions to outdoor classrooms - and for showcasing two stone benches by Ian Hamilton Findlay, one bearing the magical inscription “Songs are even able to draw down the moon from heaven”.
